Wild Kigers
Two herd management areas (Kiger and Riddle HMAs) have been set aside to safeguard the Kiger mustang in Diamond, OR.
In 1976, when gathering off the Oreana Flat Pasture, the BLM discovered a small group of physically uniform, dun colored mustangs displaying unique Spanish features.
The following year, that initial group, along with the addition of Beaty Butte “27,” started the Kiger mustang. Through genetic testing, the BLM verified their Spanish link.
Their preservation can be credited to four BLM employees: Ron Harding (who was the BLM Wild Horse Specialist), Bill Phillips (BLM Area Mgr), Chris Vosler (BLM District Mgr), and Josh Warburton (wild horse and burro specialist). These dedicated employees recognized the Kiger’s uniqueness.
Since 2011, Sarah has gone to the Kiger HMA for many years to document the family groups. Some of her photos are available for view and print on Pixieset.
